Keep Home Energy Bills Manageable

Keep Home Energy Bills Manageable

When the cost of a barrel of crude oil was only $30 or $40 just a few short years ago, the thought of $100 a barrel seemed delusional. As this is being written the price of a barrel of crude is hovering at just about that price, and a couple of years ago the peak reached was $150. Will we ever see that level again? The answer is probably yes, but the unanswerable question is: when? In any case homeowners are going to be challenged for some time to find ways to keep their home energy bills manageable.

A simple solution that will help a lot is to just close the vents and the door to any guest room or other area in the home that is seldom used. If someone visits and needs to use the room you just need to open the vents again, and that is a job that can be done in sixty seconds or less.

An energy audit is one of the best ways to find out areas to address to lower home energy bills. The auditor will find problem areas and can also give information about how to fix the identified problems. Many utility companies offer this service or can give you guidance about who to contact to have a thorough energy audit accomplished.

Air filters are also important when it comes to saving money on natural gas, electricity or heating oil. If the air filter is not clean then the appliance will need to work harder than necessary, thus you will spend more to keep it running longer. On top of that the air circulating in your home will not be as clean as it should be if the filter is dirty.

Programmable thermostats are a great way to save energy bills in a home. The temperature during the night when everyone is sleeping will be automatically adjusted each day, and nobody will notice the difference. Likewise when family members are not in the house the temperature will be adjusted as well, since there is no need to pay for heating and cooling when no one is home.
